Reshma Qureshi an acid attack survivor walks at New York Fashion Week

The story of this Indian acid attack survivor might inspire someone today! When life gives you lemon, make lemonade out of it, they said. I know this might sound lame or cliché, but truth be told, I have no better way to put it!

When most people would, 19 years-old Reshma Qureshi, who was attacked viciously by her brother-in-law and his friends two years ago, made no excuses, but became an advocate for other survivors and even went further and teamed-up with “Make Love Not Scars” to bring awareness to the issue.

Reshma Qureshi was severely burned and the attack has caused her to lose her left eye. Now, this was a very sad and unfortunate event in this brave lady’s life. What inspired me to share this story with you is not only the bravery of Reshma Qureshi to turn this tragic incident into becoming an advocate to people who suffer the pain like she did, but also her purpose-driven spirit, her devotion to do whatever she wants to do without letting her past define her current life or her future! Reshma Qureshi walked the ramp at the New York Fashion Week two weeks ago; and it was an emotional moment for her and the people that witnessed the unthinkable! The audience was “WOW” by her girth courage to walk the runway.

When asked how she feels about this moment, the 19 year-old replied:
“I feel very good walking in the fashion week, because I feel I’m not doing this for myself.”
“I feel I’m doing this for the acid attack survivors that there are and to give them confidence. I’m very excited to have this opportunity.”
If there’s anything we need to take from this, it’s the bravery this young lady has exhumed and her dedication not to make her past and scars define her future and dreams. She said and I quote : “Why should we not enjoy our lives? What happened to us is not our fault and we’ve done nothing wrong and so we should also move forward in life, I do feel brave.”
Congratulations and best of luck in life, Reshma!
