Moving is no joke; especially when you’re a busy parent and just don’t have enough time to invest in a moving project. I have moved a few times in my life, and I can assure that these tips that I’m going to share with you may seem very basic, but they do come really handy. So if you’re planning to move in 2020 or in a near future, or even help a friend or a family member move, you owe it to yourself to read this post all the way to the end!
TIP 1 : Planning and Budgeting.
Planning your moving process ahead of time is crucial; and as for every project, planning makes life so much easier. Would you need a sitter for your kids that day? Book one very early on. Would you need to work with a professional moving company? Do your due diligence and decide if you’d need to hire one or not? How much can you afford? Compare their rates. How many boxes approximately do you need? What other tools do your need? Don’t forget things like, trash bags, newspapers, sturdy tapes etc… Just like planning, budgeting for your moving is important. The cost of moving usually adds up when you factor in all the expenses from buying moving tools, or water for the helpers, to working with movers or renting a moving truck. Think about it; it’s going to be a pretty busy day and worrying about money should be the least of your concern. Have a budget in place and work around it.
TIP 2: Decluttering
Nobody wants to move into a new place with a bunch of things they don’t need or haven’t used in years. If you don’t already do a seasonal decluttering, a pre-moving declutter may just turn out to be very beneficial to you. One good decluttering practice is to donate, sell, or get rid of anything you haven’t used in at least a year. Things that don’t fit well or that you just don’t like anymore, kids toys that they outgrew, …etc can be donated to a local charity, a church, a daycare or a friend or neighbor that may need them. You’ll be checking your one good deed off for the month too! 😉
Doing a garage sale or selling items that are in excellent or good condition on websites such as ebay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist… is a good way to declutter, but also to make a little money on the side.
Decluttering may seem like a lot of work, but you would be surprised how many unused or unnecessary things you have in your house that are just using space you think you do not have. Decluttering is an excellent rule of thumb for a successful moving and will save you a great deal of space and money.
TIP 3: Protect and Organise.
We talked about newspapers, sturdy tapes, labeling, boxes and some other packing tools in tip 1. Remember? Yes, here’s how they come in place. Those wines glasses or other fragile gadgets need to be well-packed and protected. imagine your sentiment when unpacking your beloved belongings to only realize that they have been damaged or broken in the moving or unpacking process. Not a good feeling, so save yourself the headache and use some newspapers or clothes to protect your breakable items. I also find that trash bags can help in protecting your clothes that are on a hanger. Use them as the clothes bags used in the retail stores. Big blankets and sheets are also good to protect large mirrors or home goods; and some moving companies do provide some of those, when you work with them.
TIP 4: Labelling and Color Coding
I have labeled and numbered my moving boxes for most of my moving experiences, which I think is a great process, but some moving companies such as Relief Moving Company LLC are using Color Coding instead. The way color coding works is that you choose a color and you attribute that color to each room. For example, you may choose to use the color green for all boxes that belong in the Living room, and at a glance, the movers can see any boxes with the color green and know that those boxes are for the living room, without having to read what’s written on the boxe. Smart, isn’t it? Each room has its own color and the movers (or whoever is helping) would have a sheet with all colors and their designated room. Whether you choose to label and numbered your boxes or color code them, this is ultimately one of the MUST in your moving process and you not want to skip it.
